Caves of Catullus

The territory north of the Scaliger Castle is triangular in shape and consists of three hills: Curtains, San Pietro in Mavinas, the caves of Catullus.

On the latter, in a splendid panoramic position, there are the ruins of the largest and most important Roman villa in northern Italy, called the Grotte di Catullo.

The construction of the building can be dated to the Augustan period, late first century BC and early first century A. D.
The collapse of the structures and the resulting total abandonment of the building are set, rather in the fourth century AD During the Middle Ages and the modern age of Sirmione unfortunately the villagers have used part of the wall as a building material for their homes.
